VorTIC3 Research Group was founded in 2011 by several investigators of Rey Juan Carlos University, who already had a long expertise in research, particularly in the fields of database management and software engineering.

The group was originally designed with a wide scope concerning the application domain, and so the original acronym referred to a Research Group on ICT Engineering, encompassing all fields in Information Technologies, and particularly software architecture, data processing and distributed applications.

Currently, VorTIC3 is described as the Research Group on Data & Software Engineering in Rey Juan Carlos University, and in 2020 it was awarded the distinction of High-Performance Research Group (the maximum qualification) by the internal evaluation process by University itself.
